Zimbabwe's Best Self-Drive Safari Destinations
Zimbabwe offers some of the most rewarding self-drive safari experiences on the continent. With excellent roads leading into world-class national parks, well-maintained campsites, and relatively low visitor numbers, it remains one of Africa's most authentic destinations.
1. Hwange National Park
Zimbabwe's largest national park and home to one of Africa's largest elephant populations. The Main Camp area offers excellent driving circuits with numerous waterholes that attract massive concentrations of wildlife, especially during the dry season (May-October).
2. Mana Pools National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Zambezi River. Famous for its massive trees, walking safaris, and incredible wildlife viewing from the comfort of your own vehicle. High-clearance 4x4 essential.
3. Gonarezhou National Park
The "Place of Many Elephants" in the south-east is Zimbabwe's second-largest park. Remote, wild, and spectacular. The Chilojo Cliffs and Runde River are highlights not to be missed.
4. Matusadona National Park
On the shores of Lake Kariba, Matusadona offers boat-based and vehicle-based game viewing in a stunning lakeside setting. Excellent for lion, leopard, and elephant.
5. Matobo National Park
Near Bulawayo, the Matobo Hills contain one of the highest concentrations of leopard in Africa. The ancient rock art and Cecil Rhodes' grave at World's View are cultural highlights.
